Summer camp season atWest Virginia Universitybegins in May and offers many options for young people to engage both academically and physically during their summer break. Summer camps are known for providing a safe environment where children gain self-confidence as they learn new skills.

Individuals of all ages have the opportunity to explore various sports, leadership programs, engineering, forensics, media, earth sciences, the arts, or a wide variety of other interests. Along the way, they will also discover new interests, learn new skills, and build positive social interactions.

Some of this year’s many summer camps and programs include:

WVU Extension Camps – June – August

Activities for youth ages 9 through 21 through WVU Extension’s 4-H program. Includes STEM Camp, AgriSTEM Camp, Alpha Camps I and II, and more.

WVU Sports Camps/Clinics – May – September

Includes baseball, gymnastics, basketball, soccer, tennis, track and cross country, volleyball and wrestling.

Forensic Investigation Summer Camp – June 10-13

A day camp for middle and high school students who want to learn to see the world with the detective’s eye.

Tomorrow is Mine Camp, Beckley – June 16-22

A free summer camp for young people ages 10-22 from the southern West Virginia coalfields.

USGS Geosciences Summer Camp – June 23-30

Students from across the country who are moving into grades 9-12 in the fall will explore concepts and skills related to the earth sciences.

National Youth Sports Program – June 17- July 21

Open to all children ages 8-15. Activities include sports and games, daily swimming, music enrichment, career education, Book Day and Mountaineer Day with the Mountaineer mascot.

WVU Forensic Science Camp – June 17- July 21

High school students will acquire the practical knowledge and skills that forensic scientists use in their day-to-day casework.

Visual Arts Summer Academy – June 23-28

Students in grades 7-12 will participate in studio art workshops during the week, with a final student exhibit and ice cream social for families at the end.

Camp STEM – June 23-28

For high school students in grades 9-12 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Summer Dance Academy – June 23-29

Features a Young Academy, Teen Academy, and Teachers Academy, with various guest artists.

WVU Sports and Adventure Media Camp – June 24-26

A three-day program for high school students who will participate in workshops to enhance their communication, photography, video and journalism skills.

Percussion Camp – June 24-28

High school percussion students will be exposed to the highest level of musicianship, though workshops, clinics, rehearsals, performances, drum line activities, and more.

Summer Acting Academy – June – July

A professional theater training program for young actors of all levels of experience who wish to explore and develop their skills. Special Teen Academy for ages 12-18.

Engineering Challenge Camps – June – August

Seven weeks of camps for high school, middle school and elementary school students. Also includes a “Females in the Field” camp for girls in grades 9-12.

STEM Summer Academy for Girls – July 7-12

For current and incoming female high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

WVU School of Medicine Brain Camp – July 14-20

This is a new co-ed youth camp for high school students entering their junior and senior year. Students will learn about a wide range of neuroscience topics.
